Work out the 2.5% Zakat due on your cash, gold, silver, stocks and business wealth. Enter your assets and current metal prices — the calculator checks your total against the nisab threshold and shows exactly what is owed.
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam: an obligatory annual payment of a fixed portion of your surplus wealth to those entitled to receive it. For money, gold, silver and trade goods the rate is 2.5% (one-fortieth). Unlike voluntary charity (sadaqah), Zakat is a duty on every adult Muslim whose qualifying wealth stays above a minimum threshold for one full lunar year. This calculator adds up your zakatable assets, subtracts your immediate debts, checks the total against the nisab, and returns the 2.5% due.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Nisab | The minimum amount of net wealth you must own before Zakat is due. Set at the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. |
| Hawl | The holding period. Zakat is due only on wealth you have owned for one full lunar (Hijri) year — about 354 days. |
| Zakatable wealth | The assets Zakat is calculated on: cash, gold, silver, receivables, investment shares and business inventory. |
| Zakat rate | 2.5% (1/40th) of qualifying monetary wealth held for a full year. |
Include these in the calculator:
Exclude items in personal use rather than held as wealth — your primary home, personal car, clothing, furniture and everyday belongings are not zakatable.
The nisab can be measured against gold or silver. Because silver is far cheaper per gram, the silver nisab produces a lower threshold, so more people become liable and more Zakat reaches the poor. Many scholars recommend the silver standard for this reason.
| Standard | Threshold | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 85 grams of gold | Higher threshold |
| Silver | 595 grams of silver | Lower threshold — more Zakat given |
The Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60) names eight categories of eligible recipients (the asnaf): the poor, the needy, those employed to collect Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing those in bondage, those burdened by debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.
You hold $10,000 in savings and 50g of gold, the gold price is $90/gram, and you owe $2,000. Using the gold nisab:
| Cash & savings | $10,000.00 |
| Gold value (50g × $90) | $4,500.00 |
| Gross wealth | $14,500.00 |
| Less liabilities | −$2,000.00 |
| Net zakatable wealth | $12,500.00 |
| Nisab (85g × $90) | $7,650.00 |
| Zakat due (2.5%) | $312.50 |
Net wealth ($12,500) is above the nisab ($7,650), so Zakat of $312.50 is due.
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth once it reaches the nisab threshold and has been held for one full lunar year (hawl). Net zakatable wealth is your cash, gold, silver, stocks and business goods, minus any immediate debts and liabilities.
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must hold before Zakat becomes due. It is set at 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The silver nisab gives a lower threshold, so more people become liable and more Zakat reaches the poor.
Hawl is the holding period. Zakat is due on wealth you have owned continuously for one full lunar (Hijri) year — about 354 days. If your wealth stayed above the nisab across that year, Zakat is due on the balance you hold at the end of it.
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its market value. Enter the grams of gold you own and the current gold price per gram — the calculator converts it to a monetary value and folds it into your total zakatable wealth.
Not on your gross salary as you earn it. Zakat is charged on the surplus that remains at the end of your Zakat year. If your accumulated savings stay above the nisab for a full lunar year, you pay 2.5% on the balance you hold.
Zakat is an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% of qualifying wealth, given to specific categories of recipients. Sadaqah is any voluntary charity, given in any amount at any time to anyone in need.
The Quran (9:60) names eight categories: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing those in bondage, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.
